Research interests

My research interests focus on questions within the field of evolutionary ecology with a special emphasis on the evolutionary ecology of immune defense. In the center of those studies are trade-offs in resource allocation between the immune system and other bodily functions (reproduction, the development of carotenoid-based plumage coloration), seasonal patterns in the development of the immune system and the role of major histocompatibility complex genes in mate choice decisions. I address these issues in natural populations of birds both experimentally and observationally using the array of physiological tests and molecular approach. My other research interests include reproductive strategies in birds, especially the occurrence of extra-pair paternity and sex allocation patterns.
