Current research projects:

Member of the team performing the monitoring of the European bison population at Bieszczady Mountains. The program includes: population studies (numbers, dynamics, and population structure), genetic monitoring, and assessments of spatial distribution and habitat preferences. Presently, the main goal of the program is the establishment and verification of bison refuges under the framework of Natura 2000 network.

Analysis of anthropogenic changes in natural environment of Western Bieszczady based upon historical sources

The central Carpathians, in particular Bieszczady, Low Beskid and Przemyskie Foothills, are the area, where in last 200 years very complicated political changes took place, which influenced demographic and economic relationships, and in a consequence caused very severe alterations of natural environment. Those processes were multidirectional, and quite intrinsic. The basic factor was an increase of population rate between 1772 – 1939, occurring I conditions of general economic backwardness of the whole Galicia. As an effect, the anthropopression grew up, because of the increasing deficit of agricultural areas. The second important cause of considerable environmental changes were effects of a rapid development of wood and crude oil industries, taking place at the end of 19th century.

Due to political changes between 1939 – 1951, most visible through changes of state borders and resettlements of local inhabitants, practically whole industrial infrastructure of the region became destroyed. In an effect, the process of environmental changes became reversed, with an appearance of secondary succession and a gradual increase of forested area from 50 to 100% in some sites.

The aim of this project is a description of those changes through an analysis of source materials, mainly documents connected with land tax, and a comparison of those data with current patterns of plant associations within the studied area. The final effect of this analysis will be a picture of the course of intensity of anthropogenic changes upon particular components of the landscape and ecosystems in last 200 years, with quite high degree of accuracy (up to 1 sq. m in the field). Collected data allow for the reconstruction of the management pattern of particular villages even in the early stage of their existence (15th -17th century.

Carrying out the research at two levels: historical and ecological, allows for the creation of a complementary, double-plane data basis on studied areas. Such a system prevents to a high degree mistakes resulting from improper interpretation of source data.

Principal research interests:

Ecology of large mammals, with particular emphasis to inter-species relationships, and assessments of habitat capacity.

Current research projects:

Restitution of the Carpathian population of the European bison

Program includes: population studies (numbers, dynamics, and population structure), genetic monitoring, and assessments of spatial distribution and habitat preferences. The goal of the program is the establishment of a stable meta-population and the network of bison refuges in the Carpathians, through the extension of the home range of present free-ranging population of the species and introductions. The program is conducted in co-operation with Slovak, Romanian, Hungarian, and Ukrainian partners. In Polish part of the range, the focus of the program is the establishment and verification of bison refuges under the framework of Natura 2000 network.

Principal research interestsassemblages in the habitats after disturbances/stress

Research interestsbiodiversity, biologytaxonomyfaunistic survey of scuttle flies (Diptera: Phoridae)

Current projects:

1.Influence of habitat disturbances on species diversity of the scuttle fly(Diptera: Phoridae) assemblages (habilitation project).

2.Behavioral interactions between parasitic species of Phoridae and their hosts (species of Phalacrotophora Enderlain as parasitoids of Coccinellidae).

3.Scuttle flies (Diptera: Phoridae) of saline habitats of the Gulf of Gdańsk.

4.Cold-adapted Triphleba (Diptera: Phoridae) species.

My investigations on the phorid assemblages in moist pine forests ofdifferent zoogeographical regions in Polandand in Tyresta Forest (Sweden) after wildfires indicate that habitat heterogeneity resulting from various disturbances (clearcuts, wildfires, windthrowns) may create very similar conditions for colonizing small patches established after environmental stress.

The aims of the project are following:

(1)Characteristicsof the dominance structure, abundanceand species diversityof the scuttle fly assemblages of pine plantations of the Polish Lowlands established after clear-cuts and comparing them to the Phoridae assemblages constituted after wildfires and windfalls.

(2)Interpretation of the effects of disturbances (stress) on high diversity of pioneer Phoridae assemblages.

(3)Assessment of thesuitability of the Phoridae as a model group for the studies of ecological disturbancesas well as an ecosystem diversity indicator, especially in early stages of the secondary succession after environmental stress.
