Polish Journal Of Ecology

The Polish Journal of Ecology publishes research covering major aspects of ecology, including behavioural, conservation, ecosystem, evolutionary, functional, landscape, molecular, physiological, population, trophic ecology and new methods for ecological research without bias toward particular taxa or geographic regions.

Since 2026, the Polish Journal of Ecology adopts a continuous (in-progress) publishing model. Papers will be published online in BioOne as soon as possible after acceptance. While we continue to publish all papers free of charge for the authors, all papers published in 2026 will have permanent open access under a Creative Commons license in the Subscribe to Open (S2O) programme of BioOne, which will possibly be renewed in 2027 and 2028.

The Polish Journal of Ecology publishes following peer-reviewed paper types:

Research papers report original research.

Data papers consist of substantial, well-documented datasets and do not require formal analyses, but must include a detailed and transparent description of methods and metadata. The data presented in these papers will be freely reusable by others, provided that the original publication is properly cited.

Reviews must either be synthetic and make a substantial contribution to ecological theory or include a meta-analysis. Reviews with meta-analyses must provide the underlying data in a supplemental file.

Natural history notes cover an interesting observation accompanied by a clear description of the interesting aspects of the observation and how it modifies existing scientific views and by at least a photo, audio or video evidence.

Forum papers are short papers of new ideas or an opinion on an important topic to encourage discussion about ecological theory.

Comments are short contributions about recently published papers in the Polish Journal of Ecology or outside that are relevant for ecological science. Authors of the original paper will have the opportunity to respond. Both comments and responses will undergo the same peer review as the other paper categories.
